The Centre for Green Technology (CGT) project at Peterborough College, part of Inspire Education Group, marked a significant achievement today with the pouring of the final concrete structure. This state-of-the-art facility is poised to become a hub for green technology education and skills development, preparing future generations for careers in sustainability.

The CGT boasts an impressive 2,664 square meters of floor space and will house a variety of practical learning environments. Students will have access to dedicated workshops for electrical, engineering, plumbing, and motor vehicles, alongside classrooms, offices, and collaborative breakout spaces.

The construction of the CGT is a true testament to collaborative funding efforts. The Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) played a vital role, allocating £2.471 million through the Transforming Cities Fund. This commitment was further strengthened by a £400,000 contribution from the Local Growth Fund. Additionally, Peterborough City Council provided a crucial £1.9 million package through the Towns Fund.

Doors are set to open in September 2024, welcoming students to an innovative curriculum developed by Peterborough College in collaboration with employers. The program focuses on modern and emerging construction methods, alternative heat sources, and electric vehicle technology, ensuring graduates possess the necessary skills to thrive in high-growth industries.

Mirroring the green focus of the curriculum, the CGT itself is designed to be a net-zero build. This means the building’s total energy demand will be met through the use of on-site renewable energy sources, minimising its environmental footprint.

This collective investment underscores the importance placed on fostering green skills and innovation in Peterborough. The CGT will equip students with cutting-edge knowledge in sustainable construction, renewable energy, and electric vehicle technology, ensuring they are well-positioned for the green jobs of tomorrow.
