National Supported Internship Day (NSID) was created to raise national awareness of supported internships as a proven and effective transition-to-work pathway for young people with learning disabilities and/or autism.
The primary objectives of NSID are to increase understanding of supported internships among young people, families, employers, educators, and policymakers; to encourage growth in programme uptake across the country; and to act as a clear national signpost, ensuring that young people are aware that high-quality, inclusive employment pathways are available to them.
Since its inception in 2022, NSID has delivered measurable national impact. There have been year-on-year increases in online searches for supported internships, indicating growing public awareness and interest.
At Inspire Education Group, our Supported Internship Programme supports young people aged 16–24 with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) who would like to move towards employment with tailored support.
Interns gain experience in a real work environment and, where required, are supported by a Job Coach who helps break down tasks and build independence and confidence in the workplace. The programme runs throughout college holidays, and any time off must be agreed directly with the employer.
Supported Internship Success Rates
50% secured paid or voluntary work after completing the programme
35% progressed directly into paid employment
100% received ongoing transition support towards employment
Thousands of case studies have been shared across the UK, showcasing the achievements of interns, employers, and delivery partners. In addition, NSID has prompted the development of national movements, including Youth Parliament.
Each March, NSID-related content reaches millions of people, significantly amplifying the visibility and understanding of supported internships across the UK.
We support employers to develop their people and their organisations. We strive to make a positive contribution to the prosperity and wellbeing of our diverse communities.
